Head of Social Media and Community
Grist.org – Seattle, WA                                                                                               January 2013 to July 2014

  • As a member of the senior management team, I was responsible for all of Grist’s social media initiatives. This often included leading cross-organizational teams in creating social campaigns.
  • Managed the social team’s day-to-day community strategy concentrated on Facebook and Twitter, but also including Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr and others.
  • Defined high-level social goals  and forecasted FY metrics, tracking them to accurately ensure programs and campaigns are creating demonstrable results.
  • Developed and executed unique in-depth influencer tracking and “power-user” engagement strategies with the goal of converting them to ambassadors and donors.
  • Owned Facebook and Twitter audience development including advertising campaigns for paid content promotion, audience growth and engagement. When necessary, managing larger outsourced ad buys.
  • Implemented social media management standards organization-wide, including staff training on use of social media and best practices.

Social Media Producer

  • Responsible for all community management including high volume social promotion, comment moderation on all accounts, and operating as the first line of customer service on each social media channel.
  • Developed comprehensive social media strategy to increase brand awareness and traffic across multiple platforms resulting in a 250% growth in Facebook and Twitter followers.
  • Led user engagement initiatives by crowdsourcing reader responses; convening Twitter chats based on popular/viral content; executing Facebook contests; and meme creation.
  • Created innovative fundraising, social impact, and other marketing campaigns recognized by Mashable, Philanthropy.com, and non-profit communications expert, Beth Kanter.

Special Projects Coordinator

  • Coordinated donor events in Seattle, New York City, San Francisco and Washington, DC.
  • Researched and strategized implementation of a nation-wide program focused on activating Grist readers to participate in events and community involvement.
  • Conceived of and executed reader events tailored around visiting authors and influencers such as Michael Pollan, Ted Danson and other leaders in the environmental field, often on very short notice, using social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

 
Washington Field Director
Youth For Understanding – Seattle, WA                                                                   August 2006 to May 2008

  • Directed operational oversight for Washington State to deliver a quality youth foreign exchange program including planning and delivery of orientations, volunteer trainings and quarterly student and volunteer appreciation events.
  • Managed a team of over 75 volunteers, including a team of full-time area managers.
  • Analyzed prior activity and strengths and weaknesses in the Washington field resulting in the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan of new geographic areas for development.
  • Recruited host families and volunteers through Myspace.com and emerging platforms, at that time, like Facebook.

  • Designed and implemented all aspects of an innovative community science workshop used for instructing science curriculum to low-income students of New Orleans.
